From the Mediterranean,
to the summits

Five towns on the coast, four resorts in the Alps, and one car to link them. Here is what is worth knowing about each before you book, plus the detail of every airport transfer.

Terminal 2 at Nice Côte d’Azur airport at dusk

Nice

The gateway to the coast

Almost every stay on the coast begins here. Nice Côte d’Azur is the third busiest airport in France, and the pickup happens inside arrivals: name board, bags carried, no hunting for a rank. From there the whole coastline is under two hours away.

Saint-Tropez

Arrive fresh, not cooked

In summer the gulf road is taken hostage by mid-morning and the last hour can stretch to three. We leave at the hour that misses the queue rather than the one that joins it, and the Maures back roads stay an option when the coast is blocked.

The Palais des Festivals in Cannes and the Croisette

Cannes

The Croisette, without circling

During the Festival and the big congresses the Croisette closes, parking evaporates and the drop-off points move from one day to the next. We follow the official points and agree the pickup spot before you get out of the car.

Antibes

Two towns, a port, and a cape

Twenty to thirty-five minutes from the airport, but here the address matters more than the distance. The old town, Port Vauban, Juan-les-Pins and the tip of the Cap are not on the same run, and picking the wrong one costs a quarter of an hour. To reach a boat, the quay and the vessel’s name beat simply saying “the port”.

The chalets of Courchevel under snow at dusk, a black van on the resort road

Courchevel

The road that punishes improvisation

The one destination on this list that is not on the water, and the only one where the weather sets the timetable. The last hour is all hairpins, often under snow, and a closed pass adds an entire valley to the drive. So we leave equipped, and at the hour the road wants rather than the one the diary wants: winter tyres, chains on board, and the van for the skis and a whole family’s luggage.

The village of Méribel-Mottaret in its snow-covered valley, seen from the slopes

Méribel

Four villages, one ski area

Méribel Centre, Méribel Village, Les Allues and Mottaret share a name on the map and sit at different altitudes. It is the precision of the address, not the length of the drive, that decides when you arrive. Past Moûtiers the final climb is a different kind of driving: we set off equipped to do it once.

Val Thorens in the early morning, the resort set in a bowl of snow-covered peaks

Val Thorens

The highest, and so the most exposed

Europe’s highest resort has to be earned: the Belleville valley is climbed end to end, and the last few kilometres are the first the weather closes. It is the journey on this list that needs the most anticipation, and the one where leaving an hour earlier settles most problems before they exist.

Val d’Isère

La Daille, the centre, Le Fornet

Three sectors strung along a single road, and a chalet at Le Fornet is not a chalet at La Daille. The climb up the Tarentaise is long, the final stretch narrow, and Saturday traffic in season adds an hour without trying. We set the departure time to suit the road, not the diary.

Port Hercule and the yachts of Monaco seen from above

Monaco

Two square kilometres, nowhere to park

Casino, Port Hercule, tunnels and ramps: the Principality drives badly and parks worse. A driver who sets you down at the door settles the question. During the Grand Prix half the streets become circuit and the access routes change daily.
